The Food Allergy Experience
Food allergy affects one in thirteen children in the United States. Yet, many people fail to recognize the implications of this staggaring statistic and the children, parents, and caregivers dealing with food allergies are often met with challenges at home, at school, and in their community. For those contending with food allergies, The Food Allergy Experience offers guidance and invaluable perspective from a pediatrician, researcher and mother of a food-allergic child. For friends, relatives, healthcare providers, teachers, and caregivers, the book will instill a better understanding of how food allergies impact life at home, at school, and in the community, helping them to more effectively assist children with food allergies.
The idea to write this book came during a talk I gave at a food allergy support group meeting. I presented some quotes and stories I had gathered to the families, and the response was overwhelming. All the parents empathized with the stories and asked if I could provide the quotes to them in a book to help them and others understand all aspects of life with a food-allergic child. Over the last two years, we gathered additional quotes, tips and resources from parents, doctors and teachers to compile this book on the food allergy experience. We added the comics to lighten the mood, because although food allergy is a very serious issue, we all need to be able to smile and laugh. I hope this book helps families living with food allergy and helps all the people involved in a child’s life better understand what that child’s day-to-day world is like and what it takes to keep them safe. My daughter, who happens to have food allergies, is amazing, and our life is beautiful with her. This book is for all the children around the world with food allergy and for the people involved in their lives.
